HER STORY: Canadian Women in Uniform
Her Story: Canada's Servicewomen

What does it mean to be a woman in Canada’s military? And how has that story changed over the last century?

Those are some of the questions at the heart of a new short documentary we created for Veterans Affairs Canada — now part of its 2026 Veterans’ Week educational resources. HER STORY: Canadian Women in Uniform explores the experiences of women in Canada’s military, and this fall, it will reach more than 65,000 educators across the country.

But here’s the part we really love.

Veterans Affairs Canada has developed a lesson plan that asks students to watch our film alongside a 1944 Canadian Women’s Army Corps recruitment film from the National Film Board, The Proudest Girl in the World.

Students will compare how women in Canada’s military are represented in each, and look at what those differences say about how attitudes toward women and military service have changed. Two films. More than 80 years apart.

Our film is also supported by a research activity and discussion guide and featured in Veterans Affairs Canada’s new educational hub dedicated to teaching youth about Canadian women’s military service.

At Double Barrel, we do a lot of work with organizations telling stories that carry history, lived experience and a fair bit of complexity. This was one of them. We’re proud to have created it, and even prouder to see it being used to get young Canadians asking questions, looking at history and having conversations.

Working with a story that carries some weight? We’d love to hear about it. Reach out to us: hello@doublebarrel.ca
