Halton District School Board 5k Run for Mental Health Transcript
My role is the mental health lead for the Halton District School Board so I coordinate the mental health strategy and all of the little projects that work towards mental health literacy and raising awareness in our community. We're so excited to have our first, hopefully, annual Halton Runs for Mental Health with Team Unbreakable so thanks so much for coming out. It's a beautiful day.
Let's go out there and enjoy the day and celebrate this initiative together. Thanks. We are hosting Halton Runs for Mental Health 5k Run and Walk to support mental health promotion in the Halton District School Board and the Halton community. We know that it's everybody's responsibility. Everyone plays a role in student mental health and well-being and so we want to make sure that the community as a whole embraces the initiative and understands the importance.
And so we always look for partnerships with Halton Healthcare or Cameron Helps like today to help us move this initiative forward and raise the awareness as a community not just as an education sector. Back in 2005 my son Cameron took his own life and when that happened I decided that I had to try and make a difference. A good group of friends of mine and I got together and we founded Cameron Helps and it's to raise awareness about teen suicide and mental health and to establish proactive initiatives to help with that.
And one is the Team Unbreakable Running Program which we established in the last two years to help raise awareness about mental health issues. Running programs have really taken off and Halton has shown an interest in what we've been doing and has decided that they're going to get their schools involved as well. So it's really exciting for our organization.
The more schools that we get involved the bigger the program comes with raising awareness not only about mental health but helping kids with their own issues. Congratulations! We know there's a strong relationship between kids being mentally healthy and safe and academic achievement and in order for them to be successful in school they need to be healthy at school.
So this initiative is really important to do at the same time as working on academic achievement. If we're more proactive and less reactive when it comes to mental health issues the more that can be done to save a life. And our mission statement at Cameron Helps is to save one life at a time and if we can do that I think everything that we can do is well worth it. Good work! Good job! Good work! Get your medal!
About this project
Double Barrel Studios found a creative way to present the topic of Mental Health awareness for us. They took all our information and distilled it down to the essential points that needed to be communicated. From our first meeting to the final edits it was a pleasure to work with their team.
