Hi, I'm Mark Cullen, coming to you from The Garden Shed, where I have a potting bench and you might want one too. Here are the five essential tools that you need to succeed in your garden, starting with the potting bench. Make sure that your bench is really sturdy, a little bit lower than average because you're, of course, working on pots which raises all of your work up just a little bit.

I like the scoop best of all because it moves volume. Good quality scoops should last you five years to a lifetime. The containers that you plant in are important. I'll use plastic, of course, for seed starting trays, but as I pot up, I prefer to use clay because clay breathes. I like to use a good quality watering can.

You're going to use a watering can anyway, so why not get a good quality one with a rose or a breaker that's solid brass It delivers water that's nice and soft, just like rain. And then, once you get to the job of potting, make sure you use a good quality potting mix. I use ProMix Premium Organic Vegetable and Herb or ProMix Premium Potting Mix for general potting up.

And you'll want to make sure that you use a good quality plant fertilizer. I use ProMix Organic Multi-Purpose Garden Fertilizer. You take good care of your potted plants. Hi, I'm Mark Cullen, coming to you from the Garden Shed. And many of the indoor tropical plants that you've had indoors for the winter are ready now to go outside for the summer. I call this their summer vacation. About two weeks after the threat of frost has disappeared from your area, start moving your tropical plants outdoors for just an hour or two during the day.

And on the north side of the house or under the dappled shade of a shade tree until they've been acclimatized. Then you can move them into the bright sunshine if they are a highlight plant. Your tropical plants will be growing very actively through the summer months. In fact, more so than at any other time of year. It's important that you feed and make sure that you use a good quality fertilizer like ProMix, organic-based, multi-purpose garden fertilizer.

You mix it with water. It's a concentrate. Make sure that you apply it every two to three weeks right through the growing season. As you summon your plants out of doors, keep in mind that this is the best time of year to bring them under control and do a little bit of pruning. Use a good sharp pair of hand pruners and make sure that you prune just a little bit more than you might feel comfortable with.

Everybody wants it, but not everybody has it, so today I'm going to go through some really simple steps to make sure you have the best looking house on the block. First things first, you need to make sure your lawn looks great. This is something that everybody notices and a good lawn will really set you apart. And there are four things that you'll need to do if you want to attract and keep birds coming to your garden. Number one is habitat, next food, water, and safety. You want to provide a secure environment for your birds as well.

Habitat simply means a place for them to set up shop. And of course, birdhouses do the job very nicely, as do large shrubs and trees where many birds will come in, build their own nest, and have a family in your yard. As far as food is concerned, plant plants that produce fruit, like this holly, which is just covered in seasonal berries.

When planting your fruit-bearing bushes and trees, consider using a high-quality soil, like Pro-Mix, Organic Vegetable and Herb Mix, with micro-active technology. It has lots of peat moss to improve soil structure. And it feeds your plants for up to three months. The third thing is to make sure that you have water. A bird bath is a great idea, but make sure that you replace the water every week, so that you don't breed mosquitoes in it.

Providing a safe environment for birds, of course, means that you should really keep your cat indoors. It's difficult to calculate the number of birds that are lost to cats that are outdoors, but it's many millions of birds. You know, maintaining a healthy bird population in your yard and garden is really not that difficult if you keep these four things in mind. And there are a number of reasons why you would want to attract honeybees, birds, and butterflies to your garden. 30% of the food that we eat is pollinated by insects and birds. And there's not a lot of things you need to do. But keep in mind, you need to provide water.

Butterflies like a nice, flat surface. A flat rock, for instance, in your garden. Birds and bees will take water from a birdbath or a hollowed-out stone. As a general rule, planting native plants will attract the butterflies, songbirds, and, of course, the honeybees. If you have fruiting plants, like blackberries, for instance, mountain ash, service berries, crab apples, they all serve a very special purpose, both when they produce the fruit, but, perhaps more importantly, when they're in full bloom.

And when you're planting native plants, make sure that you plant in good quality soil. And I recommend ProMix, organic-based, multi-purpose garden fertilizer. Habitat is important. Food is important. Shelter is important. And if you're attracting bees to your yard, then a bee house or hotel, as I like to call them, can be extremely useful and very, very effective.

So the most important thing when it comes to starting a vegetable garden is having a plan and also starting small. It's a great idea to actually get out, sketch the garden, where the plants are going to go, and know how much space each plant is going to take.

Once you have your plan in place, then it's time to head out to the garden center and pick out all that you're going to need to make the garden happen. It's really important to buy high quality seeds, and ideally from a local supplier. They're all going to have an expiration date on the back of the package. Make sure that they're not expired.

And ideally, you want to make sure the date is as far in the future as possible because that means they're fresh. The next thing you need to get is your soil. And I love using Promix Premium Organic Vegetable & Herb Mix. It gives you 20% bigger plants, and it feeds for three months. It's OMRI listed and ready to use. It's specifically formulated with an organic fertilizer that provides gradual feeding to your plants, and mycoactive that will help produce vigorous growth and a bountiful and healthy harvest.

It's time to actually get our hands dirty. So when you go home, you want to start by getting that soil into the ground, mixing it with some of the native soil. It's OMRI certified, which means it's 100% organic. You sprinkle it around the top of the plants. So for people that don't have tons of time, this is the perfect product. You just add it to the water every two weeks during the growing season for best results.

Now it's time to get the plants into the ground. Of course you have to remember that the plants are going to be all kinds of different shapes and sizes. Remember to do that research first, space the garden out accordingly. Mark where you've put your plants. It's so easy to forget what you planted where, and if you forget what you planted where, you're going to forget what kind of carrot needs, how much water, and also how long you should expect before you start getting produce off that. These little things are really easy to forget, but if you remember them, you will be so happy that you did when you're planting everything out next season.

Pour ce qui est de l'arrosage, maintenant, pas nécessaire d'arroser abondamment la pelouse au printemps et à l'automne. En général, les pluies sont assez abondantes. C'est surtout l'été que ça devient crucial.

On doit arroser pas trop fréquemment, une fois par semaine, aux dix jours. C'est souvent suffisant, mais on arrose abondamment à chaque fois. Très important, on donne environ l'équivalent d'un pouce, donc quelque chose comme deux à trois centimètres également. Très important de faire une fertilisation aussi. Le gazon doit être fertilisé régulièrement.

C'est très important. Au printemps, on peut faire une première fertilisation en début de saison, en avril, fin avril, début mai. On peut faire une seconde fertilisation un peu plus tard, vers la fin du printemps, en fin juin. Et une troisième fertilisation qui n'est pas essentielle, mais qui peut permettre au gazon de s'endurcir avant l'hiver et de revenir en force au printemps suivant.

On va faire cette fertilisation-là généralement en toute fin d'été ou au début de l'automne, en septembre. Et n'oubliez pas de faire un sursemis. Ça, c'est l'élément crucial. Pour effectuer un sursemis au printemps, je vous recommande particulièrement les semences à gazon ultimes, toutes conditions de ProMix.

Ce sont des semences qui ont l'avantage de pouvoir germer à une température aussi basse que 4 degrés Celsius. Donc, vous pouvez effectuer votre semis dès le mois d'avril. Je vais vous assurer qu'elle soit verte, dense et en bonne santé. Voilà les secrets pour obtenir une pelouse magnifique!

Hi, I'm Mark Cullen and you know as a Canadian gardener I am so thankful that we can grow fabulous turf and one of the reasons is we get a nice long cold winter. But did you know the most important application of fertilizer you'll make all season long is the fall application. This new ProMix Premium Fall and Winter Lawn Fertilizer is fantastic.

It lasts for up to six weeks and it will produce twice as healthy a lawn as other fertilizer products on the market. Now, it's important that you apply it any time from mid to late fall, late September through October, early November, some parts of the country even late November. That's when you should apply your fall fertilizer.

It produces lots of roots in the fall and this product helps the plant help itself. To apply Premium ProMix Fall and Winter Fertilizer, I recommend that you use a good quality broadcast spreader. Set your spreader at half its normal application rate so that you're going over your lawn twice. Once in one direction like so and a second time in the opposite direction that is 90 degrees.

So you've created a criss cross pattern across your lawn. This will ensure that the product is applied evenly and come spring you'll end up with a nice even green from one side of the yard to the other. And with this product, you really can't beat it.
