About this project

A post secondary graduate level education in the 21st century goes far beyond learning accounting and marketing. It’s about risk-taking, it’s about flexibility. It’s about thinking on your feet and learning how to adapt in a rapidly changing world where borders between nations are constantly breaking down.

We were asked to create a promotional documentary about McMaster’s MBA program to explore the unique style of learning at the campus, the teaching philosophy and student life.

The video is intended to provide an introduction to McMaster’s MBA program, exploring all aspects of the student experience in the sparkling new LEED certified Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington, Ontario.

At the Ron Joyce Centre, the form and function of the building works together with the educational philosophy. It was a beautiful building to shoot … lots of light, interesting art work on the walls. And even more important, learning spaces which advance the academic philosophy of experiential learning.

One of the most important choices was to involve MBA students as on camera talent. Our host was an MBA student, coached and prepared by Double Barrel Studios staff. Though she didn’t have on camera experience before working with us, she looked like a seasoned pro (especially in the staircase shots .. not easy to walk down a staircase in high heels while remembering lines!)

The video was done in documentary style, incorporating multiple voices – student leaders and faculty who talked about why they chose or why prospective students should choose the Degroote MBA Program. The script was written in a way which demonstrated the many facets of a Degroote Business School education – academic excellence combined with a lively and fun social environment.

Thank you to McMaster’s MBA program for having us along!

From our very first conversation, it was clear that Roz and Lee ‘got it’. They understood what we wanted and, more importantly, what we didn’t want. Overcoming significant logistical challenges and a tight timeline, the Double-Barrel team got the job done on time and to rave reviews from our stakeholders.

DeGroote School of Business Transcript

The world of business is changing from globalization to international trade agreements, from economic zones to new technology and from mobile marketing to social media. So when it comes to getting your MBA, you want to choose a school that will enable you to step right out of the classroom and into the marketplace. That's what I love about the MBA program here at the DeGroote School of Business, and I'm excited to show you around this amazing facility as well as introduce you to some of the people that put this program on the cutting edge of innovative experiential learning.

From the ground up, this building was designed with students in mind. The architecture, layout, workspaces and study areas have all been certified by LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Dr. Melina Head, Director of the MBA program. When we were building the Roland Joyce Centre, we wanted to make sure it truly reflected what we were aspiring to within our program.

Experiential learning is very important for today's education. Allowing students to experience and to actually put into practice what is being discussed and to learn on their own through those experiences is very important. We really want to encourage our students to think about the broader impact that they can have in their community, in the environment and society as a whole.

Preparing students for our ever evolving future and teaching solid business principles while giving them the opportunity to apply that knowledge in a real business situation. I'm part of a school where experiential learning and this higher level transformative learning is all part of how we deliver our messages. The co-op MBA program is a brilliant example of experiential learning in action.

We have an in-house focused business consulting group. We have a collaborative decision-making room. We also have an in-house decision center which is huge for our whole financial investment field. It's a growing culture here at DeGroote. It's a philosophy carrying forward in our graduates and future leaders of tomorrow.

McMaster's MBA co-op program as a whole has, you know, such a great reputation. It's the oldest co-op program in the country so they really have the most established partnerships with outside organizations and the staff at McMaster has been tremendous getting those co-op placements and me personally now working at Research in Motion, you know, I couldn't ask for a better placement. Finding the balance between work and play is absolutely critical to long-term success in business.

Carlos Cabrero is president of the MBA Association and has been active in planning many off-campus activities. Having a good time? This program is very competitive, very intense. So it's important to let off some steam and really interact with your classmates. These people are going to be in the workforce with you after graduation and developing those networks now I think is one of the most important things that you can do.

So DeGroote really provides the opportunity to become a well-rounded person. To be successful in business means being ahead of the curve, sensing the market shifts before anyone else and knowing what to do with the opportunities. The DeGroote MBA program at McMaster University does just that. It is a recognized pioneer in the field of experiential learning.

Choose DeGroote because it's a fantastic opportunity for you to develop yourself as a professional. Choose DeGroote because we are passionate about experiential learning.
